Free Printable Math Activities!
Brrrrrr…. Baby, it’s COLD outside!
What does a person DO when it’s so cold outside the air hurts your skin? I like to make cool printable math activities to do with my students and my own children!
We have been working on learning addition facts in my special education classroom. Students on the autism spectrum often excel in memorization, but sometimes struggle with applying those skills to new situations. So even though a student may have mastered 1+3=4 in the activity we’ve been doing, that does not mean that student has the deep number sense that is expected of students in the Common Core curriculum. So in order to combat that and help them to access the general education curriculum, I offer multiple experiences with number sentences in multiple settings with multiple staff members. By switching up the routine (only as the student is ready) the students are then able to apply their math skills to new situations. Every student is different and I don’t add new activities until the student has mastered our last activity.
For example, I created an activity in Google Slides that I project onto the whiteboard and the student traces the numbers. It’s really exciting because I made a superhero fly across the screen when the student gets the answer correct. (This is really easy to make, it’s very similar to Power Point.) When the student can do that without any additional teacher prompting, we moved to a different part of the room and we practiced number sentences with counting bears while writing on the table with dry erase markers. I also created a farm animal themed math facts addition book (available for free HERE) that we practice with. The student has nearly mastered this activity so I’m working on our new activity. This time I would like to extend the activity, though. I want to combine the 1:1 correspondence skill to the math facts and I want the student to be able to visualize that 2+1=3, just like 1+2=3.
You can download that free printable math activity by clicking on the image above. I’ll then send it to you in an email.
